And we're off...

...and running in 2009!

Oh, but this seemed like a really long week! Judging by conversations I've had with others and reading blogs, it was a long week for a lot of folks. I'm chalking it up to the fact that this was the first week in like a month I was at work everyday. And I get the feeling the post-holiday slow-down has been felt by all. So, bring it on 2009...we are ready!

I generally love the first few weeks of January. The snow is still pretty and I love basking in the possibility of a new year. New calendars, new routines and new adventures.

I have a new datebook from Ecojot made of recycled paper that has a space for everyday so I can continue to note my favourite thing about each day. Would you believe I was successful at recording something for every single freakin' day last year?! Love this record and this focus of what is good each day.

Speaking of routines, the poor hound has not been getting her quota of really good walks due to the crappy walking conditions. As you can see by this photo, she hates the gear that goes with winter walks. Too funny, really...she hides when I bring out the stuff and refuses to move when it is on. No lie. I physically have to go get her and carry her to the door. She is getting better with the coat, but the Muttlucks is another story. I only dig them out when the slush is up to her earlobes. I found this groovy waxy stuff I put on her paws pre-walk instead. It protects the pads and creates a (supposedly) barrier between her skin and the salt.

That brings us to new adventures. As I was waking up from a delicious nap on New Year's Day, I had a ba-bam of an idea to raise funds for this year's Paper Arts a Thon. I bit the bullet after Boxing Day and bought a new TV (would you believe a 42" Plasma?!? I am tired of trying to watch movies on my poor little Ruby iMac) and I thought, wouldn't it be cool to have a movie night where friends are invited to chow down on popcorn and watch a flick and contribute to a great cause at the same time? It also gives me something to look forward to and plan-y'all know I love hosting stuff. I put this idea into action and last night was the first of five movie nights (the second Friday of each month until PAAT in May) and it was, by my account, a success! We watched Little Miss Sunshine (what a hoot of a movie) and raised 74$ in the process. This year PAAT is raising money for Prostate Cancer Research. My tag line? "Help me Kick Cancer in the Butt!". Clever, huh?

Upcoming adventures for January include:
*Macy and I are enrolled in a series of Keep It Simple obedience classes that start tomorrow
*Macy and I are being evaluated next Saturday so that we might become a Pet Therapy Team
*Another round of yoga classes (thank God)
*I'm hosting Bookclub for my Peeps next week
*A "can't help but be super fun" workshop at the Barn

So there you have it. January has no choice but to rock.

PS-A group of us went to the city last week to dine at CUT. Amazing is the only word that is appropriate.

Great post, Taryn!! Love the movie night idea for PAAT and the pic of Macy is too cute! Where did you get the wax for her feet?

Hey Taryn,
You so TOTALLY Rock in the IDEA department! (and many, many, many other depts as well!) what a great idea for a PAAT fundrasier and $74 is an awesome start! I think Macy might disagree about the 'brilliant idea' of her wearing clothes. Hopefully the dogs won't get together and boycott them. Tommy has a sweater that he detests. Can't wait to see my PEEPS next Monday. Happy to be coming to your house....wanting to see the birches IRL.

I am so looking forward to Bookclub I can't even tell you...and I also look forward to your fantastic posts :o) I have been lazy in the blog dept, unlike you I'm not crazy about January, would just as soon curl up with a blanket somewhere & come out at the end of the month... Your movie night is awesome...Ria should do the same!!! (she has movie night every Friday!) Thanks for sharing Taryn

Great idea for raising funds!

Melody likes her coat but hates her boots (she goes barefoot and we walk on the side of the road instead of the salt-laden, ouchy sidewalk). Even though she dislikes the boots - we keep them for a good laugh now and then (does that make us mean?).

Can't wait for book club!
