A Mouse Story

When I came home for lunch the other day, there was a little baby mouse on the front porch. Sigh. I thought he had expired until I picked him up and he MOVED. So tiny...and his eyes were not even open.

Of course I had to show him to Macy. And try to feed him some milk from a needless syringe. He took a little milk and then the ungrateful sot peed in my hand (!).

I wasn't sure what to do with him as I couldn't figure out where he had come from, so I put him in the flowerpot on the front porch. Look closely...he's there washing his milk-squirted face!

He was still there when I got home from work and holy moly, he was still alive ! So I gave him a raspberry that was in the CSA basket. He didn't touch it. Tried to give him some more milk, but he wasn't into that, either. That evening, neighbours Trudi, Paul, Kate and Will stopped by for a little chat as Macy and I were in the driveway and of course I had to show my pal Will the little visitor. I didn't tell him what I had to show him and it was some cute when I told him to look under the flowers in the pot and tell me what he saw (I love 3 year olds). Of course, he wanted to pick it up and hold it. And then he wanted to take it home (!). Trudi wasn't into that, so we put him back in the pot.

The next morning, he was gone. As in disappeared. I would like to think his Mama came and found him, but there were dirty paw prints of the feline variety around the pot so I think Mousie met an untimely end. But we'll go with the Mama story, OK?

I've read that Momma Mice - and please understand this is ONLY when they need to rescue their wayward babies - will hitch rides on felines and use their Momma powers to make them carry them to where their babies are. (Some sort of OLD feudal emergency provision in the laws of nature ...) So I too choose to believe it was a Momma rescue.

I am stickin' with the Momma story too.

You really are an inspiration...someone who documents all of life's LITTLE stories. TFS!
